About Us

SMU is at the forefront of education and training in Cyber Security and Information Assurance and is designated as a National Center of Excellence in Information Assurance Education by the National Security Agency (NSA). The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department at SMU offers several courses covering both traditional and leading-edge aspects of security. In addition to traditional BS, MS, and Ph.D. programs in computer science and engineering, CSE also offers a masters degree program in security engineering and a certificate program in information security. The consortium of High Assurance Computing and Networking (HACNet) laboratories, founded in 1996 and backed by more than 20 years of research in security, reliability, and systems engineering is SMU’s premier security research facility for education and research in these areas. HACNet is a multidisciplinary consortium of four laboratories established as part of the CSE Department at SMU. Although housed within the CSE Department, HACNet has a broad mandate designed to leverage research and development efforts in areas such as psychology, ethics, law, and management issues as they relate to cyber security. HACNet research project sponsors include NSF, NSA, ONR, NIST, and industry. Currently within the HACNet laboratories, there are 14 Ph.D. students and several M.S. and undergraduate students conducting research under the guidance of 5 full-time faculty members.
